IIPM and UGC dispute getting worse

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

UGC (Universal Grant Commission) in a public notice has issued that IIPM run by Arindam Choudhary is not recognized by the Government or any Indian education bodies. It further states IIPM has no link with the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), UGC or All-India Council of Technical education (AICTE)

The notice reads like-
“IIPM does not have the right of conferring or granting degrees as specified by the   University Grant Commission”.

These degrees include MBA (Masters of Business Administration), BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) and BCA (Bachelor of computer application).

UGC has strongly opposed against IIPM using the name of respected education bodies like AICTE and MHRD for the advertisement of its programs and courses. To further strengthen its case, UGC and AICTE have also supported a petition filed in Delhi High Court on Wednesday.

The Division Bench of Chief Justice Deepak Mishra and Justice Manmohan strongly reacted to these allegations and treated the PIL as a serious concern.

The Bench concluded “no educational institutions has the right to put students under any illusions or confusion in a country ruled by the law.”

It has asked Union of India, UGC, AICTE and the IIPM to file for affidavits so that they can clarify their stand upon the genuineness of the courses offered in the institute and affiliation.

UGC has also alleged IIPM for “indulging in cheating”. UGC has issued a notice in some newspapers at the last week of July, after the Andhra Pradesh state council of higher education had sent a letter to IIPM Hyderabad for the authenticity of courses it offers. According to a copy of the letter sent by Andhra Pradesh State councils of Higher Education-

“this is by direction to inform that the council has received a complaint alleging that the institution (IIPM) has been functioning by offering various courses which violates the provisions of the Andhra Pradesh Education Act and Regulations of the Central Agencies”.

IIPM has also responded strongly against the allegations made by UGC and Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher education. It has come up with a public notice on September 9 in a leading newspaper with three headings which state-

1) “IIPM is a world class institution which provides world class education”
2) “IIPM is constantly ranked at the top”
3) “IIPM is not a University nor does it give degrees! Does anyone think otherwise?”

IIPM Group President for corporate affairs Amit Saxena commented in his e-mail that the institute (IIPM) is the on-site academic partner of MS University which grants its degrees to IIPM students. He further concluded that IIPM has made representations to the UGC and Andhra Pradesh State council of Higher Education to “clarify the stand”.
